I would read New Seeds of Contemplation. That's a good one, lots of great thoughts in there, it has really shaped who I am.
If you are interested in that type of writing you might check out Henri Nouwen too. He says a lot of the same things, it's a little more readable however plus his books are really short! I recommend The Inner Voice of Love or The Way of the Heart. Both short, you could read them each in a day and I would recommend you do. This would be a good time for you to read these. I think they would help. Now that I think of it I would put Merton off and read these two books.
