How Did I Miss This?

I just started listening to World Waits by ex-Sunny Day Real Estate Jeremy Enigk about a month ago. Really strong record! Just as I discovered this I learned that his new release The Missing Link comes out in August. Man, i'm behind. Anyway, the only track i could find online, but a good one...

My PersonalDNA

My personalDNA Report

This was kind of cool, fairly accurate. Plus, it's a good boredom killer, takes about 7 whole minutes! I think i might have done this before already.

Is this the technical weather term?

Sprinkles??? Has the Weather Channel always used the word "sprinkles?" I know my mom used to, but the weather channel? What happened to "light rain"? "possible showers"? "mist"?

But sprinkles?

This post is a good indicator that I have absolutely nothing of substance or use to blog about right now.

This makes so much sense...

I'm not sure how many times I said to Kelli during the playoffs last year, "this game seemed totally rigged" (much like the Miami Finals of the year prior). The game I'm speaking most of is game three of the Suns/Spurs series (although there were others). Well, it turns out that it was! Who were the officials? "Officials: Greg Willard , Tim Donaghy , Eddie F. Rush" Unfortunately it was just found out that Tim Donaghy was betting on the games and altering the outcome accordingly as you can see here!

I know that this is not the Spurs fault and I in no way blame them because I know they can't feel good about this either. But this pretty much means the 2007 season meant absolutely nothing. This is tragic for the state of NBA affairs. How is it possible to even watch a game from here on out without having to wonder, "are the refs fixing this game for profit?" I'm not sure it is. This is really sad.

Bill Simmons, as always makes it interesting here.

If you want to see it for yourself, here goes!

Good Question

“If you had been living in Jesus’ time and had heard Him teaching would you have been one of his followers? To be an honest taker of this test, I think you have to try to forget that you have read the Gospels and that Jesus has been a “big name” for two thousand years. You have to imagine instead that you are walking past the local courthouse and you come upon a crowd listening to a man named Joe Green or Green Joe, depending on judgments whispered among the listeners on the fringe. You too stop to listen, and you soon realize that Joe Green is saying something utterly scandalous, utterly unexpectable from the premises of modern society. He is saying: “Don’t resist evil. If somebody slaps your right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too. Love your enemies. When people curse you, you must bless them. When people hate you, you must treat them kindly. When people mistrust you, you must pray for them. This is the way you must act if you want to be children of God.” Well, you know how happily that would be received, not only in the White House and the Capitol, but among most of your neighbors. And then suppose this Joe Green looks at you over the heads of the crowd, calls you by name, and say, “I want to come to dinner at your house.”

I suppose that you, like me, hope very much that you would say, “Come ahead.” But I suppose also that you, like me, had better not be too sure. You will remember that in Jesus’ lifetime even His most intimate friends could hardly be described as overconfident.”

The Final Harry Potter Book Leaked!!!

From now until I am finished reading the final HP, I am cutting myself off from the outside world. Now that the book has leaked on the internet as of today, there are already people who know exactly what happened and would love to ruin it for the rest of us. Therefore, I am not reading blogs, I am not watching the news, and I am not listening to the radio! Harry Potter fans beware!

So, if I don't answer when you call, don't be offended!

I just saw Harry Potter

Total Suckfest! I am convinced on this one, if you haven't read the book, you're probably not really going to understand what's going on. They didn't even really explain the Order of the Phoenix! Not to mention the changes in the plot in several places. It just doesn't make any sense if you're a fan of the books. I asked Kelli as we got home, "why do we keep seeing these things? every one of them is disappointing!" I think the movie had some cool scenes but this one I can literally say, it has absolutely nothing on the book. This was so under-developed and left so much out but I'm not sure I know the answer, the movie would have to be about 4 hours long to really nail it.

Anne Bradstreet/////Nathaniel Hawthorne/////Flannery O'Connor

I decided to do my History of Christianity in America paper on these three authors and their contribution to and critique of the church in their distinct time periods. I think I may have been a little ambitious to try to do this. It would have been easier to write a biography paper on Jonathan Edwards who must have a thousand books written about him (although I find him incredibly boring) but wanted to do something I found a little more exciting. This is taking a lot of time but I'm enjoying it tremendously.

I didn't know much about Anne Bradstreet before I read her poetry and biography. Fascinating and unbelievably difficult life as a Puritan coming to Massachusetts from Northampton England. Not only is she the first published American woman poet, but she is an inspiration to all Christ-followers in the way she handled sickness, suffering, and loss. She was perpetually ill, has small-pox as a child, lost four grandchildren, lost her home and all her possessions in a fire and managed to raise 8 children! I would encourage you to read some of her poetry, especially:

Verses Upon the Burning of Our House

The Flesh and the Spirit

Upon a Fit of Sickness

The Vanity of All Worldly Things

Her work is a great reminder of our own mortality and the temporariness of everything that we hold so close to us. Very inspiring woman!

I also read Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood over the weekend. Wow! What a story! Disturbing, odd, and I can't seem to get it out of my head. I highly recommend it. I enjoyed it more than The Violent Bear it Away. Everything that Rises Must Converge is a great set of short stories as well. I look forward to reading A Good Man is Hard to Find. I have heard great things about that one.

On a blog recently I read of a man's reading habits and how he selects books and his first rule of selecting a book is "No Fiction". I couldn't believe it! The more I read classic fiction the more I realize how much I gain from it and how much more I understand the human race through stories and the brilliant minds that have come before my usually dull one. I can't even begin to tell this man how much he is missing out on! What a waste! This is more than just entertainment, there is depth in these books that you can't find anywhere in our shallow culture. That is a whole discussion for another time though I guess. Anyway, 13 pages down, 7 to go!

someone tell me this is a sick joke

I thought I moved away from Tampa, FL?

This would be a great time to give much deserved thanks to Tom Lips who installed our window air conditioner last week! Tom, you have no idea how you have improved our lives (especially today!)

Speaking of, if you haven't check out Tom's homemade pipes click here and buy one!

They're so awesome I almost picked up smoking a pipe just so i could own one.

Back from Lake Tahoe

Just got back from our vacation last night from visiting Kelli's aunt and uncle at their place on Lake Tahoe. We did everything! Hiking, Biking, Rafting, and Boating and I'm tired.

I'll post a pic link soon. Lake Tahoe is beautiful. This is Kelli and I on top of a little island that we kayaked out to in Emerald Bay where (can't remember her name) used to have a private little Tea House. This was Kelli's favorite spot and I think you can see why!

Not a bad view for tea time!

Launch what?

Today I was surprised to see this as an Amazon recommendation. It's a book called Launch and was penned by Nelson Searcy who started the Journey church at the same time we were starting Mosaic in New York City. It's fine that he's writing a book. But it is this that is more than slightly bothersome.

No money? You guys started with about a million dollars from the Southern Baptist Convention and about 5 staff members? Remember??? I do. And so did we at Mosaic. I would never dream of saying we started with no money or no staff members. That would be about as ridiculous as...well...you saying that.

Now, I'm not one to call someone else a liar, but I'm not sure deceptive is a strong enough word here. I hesitate to say anything because I'm not apt to trying to defame people publicly. This is extremely frustrating because it is simply not true.

I just wonder how much more inside is not true.
