Really enjoying The Everybodyfields new album "nothing is okay". This is a good album for those who want to like Drive-By Truckers but think they're a little too hick and a tad too cheesy. Or if you like The Avett Bros. you'll probably like this.

You are becoming way too much of an easy listening guy. I feel like half the stuff you are sharing lately is 70s Eagles based pop with country and folk flourishes.
Only one not understanding the south would declare DBT too hick and too cheesy. I disagree on a level you cannot fathom.
It is probably because it is the "southern thing" they so elegantly talk about in their true life tales of white southerners that no one else acknowledges in music in a truthful manner (unlike country which does not get to the pathos and complexity of the white southern thing).
I wish you had grown up in the south to understand it. It is not about musical stylings alone. It is about an ethos. It is why some people get DBT and some don't. It is why some people get KOL and some don't.
To an extent it may be very parochial music that is for 1 group but marketed to be consumed by the masses (I would say the same about some rap, etc.).
I listen to you regarding music. Lead me to more interesting pastures.

Only one listening to the song "Bob" on DBT new album would declare them too hick and too cheesy. If I were from the South I would be embarrassed by that song, and most of that album. I'm thankful I don't understand what it's like to be from the south if DBT and KOL are the representatives.

I agree with you on both those albums. Although there is a definite 70s feel to them (lots of ELO and Queen in P&A).
I did not give GA a chance at first because in the context of the muxtape, I was not impressed. I had to listen to the entire thing. It is derivative, but what isn't. But it is derivative of some of my favorite music- so it is right down my alley.
But, lots of what you have been selecting lately has been pretty darn mellow (last year's picks notwithstanding).
The thing about DBT is they are a high risk/ high reward band (for me- like Bright Eyes, whom you HATE). I like bands that take risks and fail sometimes because of their high aim. I would say half the songs on any given DBT albums could be corny (not cheesy) or off the mark. But, half of them are sheer genius on a level most bands never approach. Even on their latest, listen to "2 Daughters..." and "Lisa's Birthday" plus others. This is pure alternative country with pure old country flourishes.
The albums is amazing, with a few missteps- like any great band that is inconsistent.
I would argue that is what makes a band like BDT so great. they remind me of The Replacements in that regard.
Plus, it dose not lull me to sleep like the Everybodyfields.

Yeah, I agree. I guess I haven't found a whole lot lately that isn't mellow that I've liked. I'm definitely open to suggestions however.

I do like "2 Daughters" and I love "I'm Sorry Houston". I think that song is fricking great.

Ha, I love being lulled to sleep by the Everybodyfields. I do think their name is terrible though.
Plus I think cloudy, rainy Portland is making me a mellow hippy :)
maybe so... I would much rather be in a place known for good music (although the local scene is getting a little better- and we have some decent alt country bands), even if it mellowed me out.
But, I fight against the mellow music, because I cannot go gently into middle age.
