Christian Music

I haven't done a list in a while which is a good thing because I went a little nutso for a while over Christmas but we were talking last night with some friends and we started talking about Christian music that we listened to in High School and it brought back an entirely different world in which I used to live and I thought it would be a complete disservice to you and myself if I did not post a list of the best High School Christian Album's (now keep in mind, this is for people who lived during the explosion of Christian rock right around 1996-2000). About the second year in College I started to listen to good music again, so keep in mind this is about a four year window here.

Plankeye - Commonwealth
My favorite album of the Christian rock scene.

Jars of Clay - Jars of Clay

Third Day - Third Day

Caedmon's Call - Caedmon's Call

Five Iron Frenzy - Our Newest Album Ever
Reese Roper is my hero (plus who couldn't love Jeff the girl?)

Seven Day Jesus - Seven Day Jesus
What's the deal with Christian artists and self-titled records?

Switchfoot - The Legend of Chin
Still a good cd today.

Bleach - Space
Who would have thought Kentucky Christian College could produce these guys? Unfortunately they should have retired about 10 years ago.

Newsboys - Take Me To Your Leader
The song "Lost the Plot" is still awesome.

The Supertones - Adventures of....
The whole ska thing is a little embarrassing now, but tell me you didn't skank at the show?

Audio Adrenaline - Bloom
There's still no one cooler than Will.

D.C. Talk - Jesus Freak
Let's be honest, this one started it all for Christian rock for high schoolers.

So who am I missing here???

Your entire list brings back warm, fuzzy feelings. Good picks.

The only things your forgot were:
Dryve: werlywheel
Rose Blossom Punch: Ephophone
Dime Store Prophets: Love is aginst the grain
Black Eyed Sceva: Way Before The Flood
Project 86: Drawing Black Lines
Insiderz: Moter City Ska

Ok, that's all I got off the top of my head. I'm going to go have to look through my CD's and see shat else I forgot.

man this takes me back. I was a hooge ska kid in high school, and worshiped Five Iron with a passion. I listened to their first album (upbeats and beatdowns) more times than i think i've listened to anything else - ever. The first switchfoot is still quite good, too.

Savage literally stole about all of my other picks... but, i would also include:

Vigilantes of Love - V.O.L.
All Star United - Self Titled
Fold Zandura - Self Title
Relient K - Self Titled
Ghoti Hook (!!) - Sumo Surprise

and i think i tried to like ZAO, but, never really could. I'm sure i'll be thinking of more as the day goes along..

Guh!

Skillet, Plumb, The Normals, and Everybody Duck!

Gah! Starflyer 59!!

... well, thanks for ruining my concentration for the entire rest of the day. Hope you're happy.

as with others, i dug, and still dig, sceva, mallonee and derek webb.

i also started listening to rich mullins shortly after he died and haven't stopped since.

come to think of it, that harrod and funck cd i lifted off a friend is still pretty good.

what about jennifer knapp? i suppose you could add third day and the waiting because it seemed like they opened for every show i ever saw in high school.

I agree with betsy, i did like The Waiting for a while. I loved Burlap to Cashmere for the 1 year or so they existed. And Jars of Clay's first album was really amazing for that time period.

Oh yeah, I was classmates at KCC with every one of the original Bleach bandmembers. They were originally called "Muffin" (seriously), but the music rep who came to hear them at the school and eventually signed them said Muffin was not a marketable name, so they changed it to Bleach.

A couple of the dudes were really weird guys, tried too hard to be "alternative", the others were cool. One was the son of a tenured professor. Never did like their music.

oh! i thought of another one! do you remember 'reality check' i think was their name? they sang "masquerade" and i remember the video being used a lot to get kids to stop wearing "masks". they broke up right when i started listening to christian music so i don't know much else about them.

Reality Check was really awesome. I still have that cd at home, actually. They only released one album and were together for maybe 18 months.

omg, i was so a fan of Reality Check. Probably b/c they performed at CIY once. Same goes for Church of Rhythm. That one's from either Jr. High or HS, can't remember...but I'm thinking Jr. High b/c I had them sign my Bible. I doubt I was that ridiculous in high school.

Aside from the rock scene, J. Knapp was definitely a big hit along with Point of Grace (sadly, I admit this). I probably could go on and on w/ all kinds of bad music I used to listen to, but I'd say some are still classics...especially old school dcTalk and the self-titled Caedmon's cd.

oh wow. this brings back memories of having pot luck dinners in the fellowship hall...

i was big on the waiting, dc talk, and supertones in junior high.

"goodbye" by plankeye will always be one of my all time favourites.

Jeff, what church did you go to where they played this stuff at "pot luck dinners". Didn't you go to Central?! No way that happened there. I'm calling you out for a blatant and unfair slam on pot-luck dinners. You must still be bitter about all the blue-hairs making you go through the line last.

It wasn't one of my favorites, but I know it was ridiculously popular on Christian radio - is there any love out there for "Big House" by Audio Adrenaline? I did like the fact that they told me I could play football in heaven, which I still do hope actually happens.

Also wanted to "second" the first comment about Jars of Clay and say that I really like Relient K's Christmas cd, although I don't think it came out too long ago.

andy osenga is writing really good solo stuff. do you ever listen to him? also, i just heard a song from jon foreman's solo cd...its really good too.

by the way...you used to LOVE plankeye. i forgot about that. i'm so happy you reminded me.

Burlap to Cashmere (they had one fantastic CD)...also Waterdeep (still gets a lot of play on my iPod)...Bruce Cockburn (great musician)...Mark Heard...and I hate to admit that a guilty pleasure (that I still occasionally indulge in) is Chris Rice (good lyricist is not a bit whiney).

Anonymous said...

That was supposed to be 'if' not a bit whiney...at times he is.

i must rebutal!!

i would listen to those cds during our pot luck dinners at church. i would get the food, go sit outside on the curb and listen to them. i know...sad. but it's true.

Gonna have to second Dime Store Prophets. Loved that CD. Also a guy named Micheal Knott. He fronted a band called LSU and did some solo stuff. (WARNING: Shameless plug ahead) My band in high school got to open up for Skillet. We got to hang out with the original members when they sounded...you know...original. All Together Seperate was fronted by an incredible vocalist named Dex. To hear them do Paradigm live was almost unbelievable. Little known band named Calibretto 13 made a stint on Tooth and Nail. Good indie sound. Speaking of hot leading ladies...Dakoda Motor Company. I used to get dress for baseball games listening to "Alive". Thought someday when I was famous I could plug them. That worked out. And who can forget Deliriou5? They were ahead of the game with t3xt language. And nobody is going to mention Geoff Moore and the Distance? Seriously. Somehow they were the christian artist I saw in concert the most. I'm not sure how that worked out. All I remember from the concerts though is that he was really tall. Gotee had an artist named Johnny Q. Public that opened for Bleach one time. The lead singer was extremely strange. Pillar came into the game a little late for me, but I still liked their first album. Small Town Poets was another favorite band that we used to do cover songs of. Which leads me to my favorite christian band of all time...Last Exit anyone?
