A Perfect 10 out of 10!
I'm only pages from the end of The Brothers K by David James Duncan and I've got to be honest; I've read A LOT of books in my short 27 year life, but this might be the most enjoyable novel I've ever read. This is a book you never want to end! It's funny..I actually laughed out loud in places which is very rare for a book. It's suspensful, the storyline is gripping, the characters are unusually developed, and the social and religious commentary is spectacular. This might be the perfect novel! I cannot say enough about this book. I have a feeling that everything else I read this year is going to be disappointing after reading this.
Although, Kelli and I just ordered our copy of Atlas Shrugged yesterday so we're pretty excited about that too!
Anyone else reading anything exciting right now?

I'm so happy you're going to read Atlas!
The Brothers K is still my favorite book of all time. I got liz to read it, and she spent the last 400 pages sitting on the couch all day and weeping and laughing into the pages. Brilliant book.
Oh, also, i thought you would find this wonderful: http://branthansen.typepad.com/letters_from_kamp_krusty/2007/08/rule-13-awesome.html
Hmph. Ok, comment window didn't like that long link, so here it is, all chopped up (copy and past all three lines next to each other in the address bar):

I thought you would have had something to say about the last Harry Potter...have you read it yet? It's exceptional.
Hey Katie,
the last Harry Potter was great. I guess the reason i didn't say anything is that everyone is so touchy about giving away spoilers so I just refrained from saying anything at all but I thought it was a great ending and I really enjoyed the book. Are you a Harry Potter fan? Did you like it?
Yes, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan. In fact, we did our 302 project about HP. :-) I loved the book, thought it was a fantastic ending, I just felt really sad when it was over! However, I saw an interview where JK Rowling said she would be writing an encyclopedia of the world of Harry Potter in the future, so that should be interesting.
Have a great day!
Wow, an IDS project out of it! That's fun! I have wondered if she'll write some more either A) about the next generation where they left off or B) maybe a prequel when Harry's parents are still alive. I could see her going back and writing a book on that. who knows?
i heard about this book, doesn't it parallel the one by dostoyevsky? might have to pick it up for plane trip back to russia in a few weeks...
say hi to kelli for me. hope you guys are doing well. when i get back to russia i may consider re-entering the blog world.
what are you listening to right now? i'm dying for some new music and you've always got good suggestions.
"doesn't it parallel the one by dostoyevsky?"
-Very, very loosely. You basically see some similarities between the tendencies and personalities of the characters in this book and those in dostoevsky. But don't go in looking for too much!
"what are you listening to right now?"
-Great Lake Swimmers - Ongiara
-The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism
-Rocky Votolato - The Bragg and Cuss
-Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger
-Editors - An End Has a Start
-Josh Ritter - The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter
Have a fun trip back to Russia!
dustin, this book is a roller coaster. i'm laughing and crying and flipping back pages because i get the brothers mixed up with each other. dostoyevsky would love it because of the depth of the characterization and the complexities in the people...how they're all human...and the loyalty they show each other. the religious fanaticism...evil vs good but you don't always know which is which. now i have about 80 pages or so left and it's really sad. i'm waiting for the "happy" ending.
thanks for the recommendation. and for the music too. i've tried to like the great lake swimmers but still don't. love the new rocky too. especially silver trees. i have it on repeat alot.
have you heard AM Soul Variations? Andy Davis (try the song first "Laugh So You Don't Cry") I found them the other day and have been listening them as I'm driving all over the stinking state of Illinois.
leaving in 2 days. say hi to kelli for me. hope you're both doing well.
wow Misty! I can't believe you're so far in! Isn't it suspenseful? It's hard to put it down in the last 100 pages! what you are saying about the dostoevsky thing makes total sense. I can see it the correlation more now that you put it like that. Thanks! Kelli and I were hoping you could shed some light!
